We also partner with PatientFI, CapexMD, Future Family, and Lending Club in order to offer a range of financing and loan options.

With one in eight couples turning to fertility treatments to help them realize their dreams of parenthood, TFI understands the deep importance of being able to afford care. We’ll work with you from the outset to outline a treatment plan and all anticipated costs, review insurance coverage and benefits, and assess whether financing or loan options make sense for you.

The costs outlined here apply only to patients who do not have insurance coverage for fertility treatments. The team at TFI will work with you to identify possible coverage and alternative financing options that meet your needs.

What Affects the Cost of Fertility Treatment?

The cost of fertility treatment can range widely based on several different factors. The financial counselors at TFI will guide you through every step of the process, from initial consultations and tests all the way through treatments. Key factors impacting total cost include:

  • Treatment type: More advanced, intensive treatments like IVF will cost more than simpler procedures like IUI. Use of donor sperm, eggs, or embryos will also impact costs, as will use of medications and any additional services, such as PGT and freezing.

  • Number of cycles completed: Many patients undergo several rounds of IVF or egg freezing before achieving their fertility goals. Each round typically incurs separate fees, so completing multiple cycles may lead to significantly higher costs.

  • Fertility medications: Medications — such as those taken to stimulate egg production, strengthen the uterine lining, or trigger ovulation — can all add to the total cost of treatment.

  • Use of donor eggs, donor sperm, or gestational carrier: Some patients make use of donor eggs, donor sperm, or a gestational carrier to fulfill their dreams of parenthood. These services are typically quite complex, involving comprehensive screenings, various medical procedures, legal agreements, and more. For this reason, costs can increase substantially when using a donor or carrier.

  • Lab services and add-ons: Advanced laboratory services such as genetic testing, ovarian reserve testing, or egg, embryo, or sperm cryopreservation (freezing) can all raise total costs.

  • Insurance coverage vs. out-of-pocket status: The specifics of your insurance plan will greatly affect how much you end up paying for fertility treatments. In some cases, plans will cover the majority or even all of treatment, while others may cover a small portion or none. Whether you’re paying out of pocket or have substantial coverage, we’ll help you manage the costs of treatment and create a plan of action that makes sense for your situation.

Fertility Treatment Cost FAQs

  • Insurance coverage for IVF can vary significantly based on your individual provider and plan. Coverage levels can differ widely — some plans may cover most or all IVF-related expenses, while others provide limited or no coverage. It’s important to thoroughly review your policy and reach out to your insurance provider with any questions you have. If your insurance comes through your workplace, your HR or benefits coordinator should also be able to assist.

As of July 1, 2025, Tennessee became the first state in the South to establish legal protections around fertility care; this protects patients’ access to treatments such as IVF. Although this will not impact your insurance coverage or benefits, it does provide peace of mind to hopeful parents seeking assistance with family building.

At TFI, our financial coordinators are on hand to help you understand your insurance coverage and make the most of your benefits. If you need to pay out of pocket, we’ll help you find a financing option that fits your specific needs.

  • Whether egg freezing is covered by insurance will depend on your specific insurance provider and plan. As with IVF, some plans may include a broad range of benefits, while others may not offer any coverage at all.

Coverage may also depend on the reason you’re pursuing freezing. Elective egg freezing — done for personal or lifestyle reasons, such as delaying parenthood — may not be covered. However, medically necessary egg freezing — for example, to preserve fertility ahead of treatments or conditions that can impact reproductive health, such as cancer, autoimmune diseases, or gender-affirming care — is more likely to be included in your benefits.

  • To determine whether your insurance covers fertility care, start by reviewing the details of your individual plan. If you’re unclear on any aspects of it, contact your insurance provider directly; they should be able to walk you through your benefits and clarify any questions you may have.

If your insurance is provided through your job, your HR or benefits coordinator can also be a great resource. Some employers may offer fertility benefits, while others may not. The team at TFI will help you navigate the ins and outs of your coverage and confirm benefits directly with your provider.

  • Yes, you can generally use health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) to pay for fertility-related expenses, including treatments like IVF, egg freezing, IUI, FET, and PGT. Eligible expenses often include medications, procedures, and diagnostic testing as well.

However, coverage can vary widely based on the details of your specific plan. It’s important to review your account’s guidelines or consult your benefits provider to confirm what’s included. For instance, long-term storage of eggs, sperm, or embryos may not be considered a qualifying expense.

  • The total cost of IVF typically covers several key steps in the treatment process, including:

    • Initial consultations and diagnostic testing: These first appointments and diagnostic evaluations are done to assess your fertility and guide your personalized treatment plan.

    • Egg retrieval: This quick outpatient procedure involves collecting eggs for fertilization, testing, or freezing.

    • Fertilization: During fertilization, retrieved eggs are combined with either partner or donor sperm in a laboratory setting.

    • Embryo culture and monitoring: Fertilized embryos will be carefully cultured in a lab and observed for proper growth and development before being transferred to the uterus to achieve pregnancy.

  • Yes, using donor eggs or sperm can increase the overall cost of IVF, IUI, and other treatments. Donated egg and sperm are usually not included in standard treatment pricing and will be considered an additional expense. Because the donation process itself is so involved, requiring comprehensive medical and psychological donor screenings, various tests and medical procedures, and legal documentation, donor costs can add substantially to total expenditures.

At TFI, we’re proud to offer a leading egg donor program, with a diverse, healthy pool of donors to choose from. We can also recommend donor sperm banks — only those that are accredited by the American Association of Tissue Banks, which helps ensure all donor sperm meets specific standards for quality and disease screening.

Whether you’re pursuing parenthood on your own, facing medical reasons that prevent the use of your own eggs or sperm, or building a family as an LGBTQ+ individual or couple, our team will support you through all financial aspects of care.

  • Because fertility care is so personalized, costs can vary greatly from patient to patient — depending on treatment type, number of cycles completed, and more. Note that medications are typically not included in the base cost of fertility treatments. Specialized procedures and tests, genetic testing, optional add-ons, and long-term frozen storage fees for eggs, embryos, and sperm can all increase costs.

  • In many cases, pre-authorization (also referred to as “prior authorization”) may be required by your insurance provider before starting fertility treatment. This is done to confirm that your treatment is medically necessary and covered under your plan. Requirements will vary based on the specifics of your insurance policy, the type of treatment you're pursuing, and whether you're working with in-network or out-of-network providers. Some plans may also require proof of prior conception attempts or other documentation from your doctor.

You can reach out to your insurance provider directly to confirm whether pre-authorization is needed and any other information or paperwork they may require. The experienced financial counselors and insurance coordinators at TFI will guide you through the pre-authorization process.

  • Yes, pursuing preimplantation genetic testing can add to the costs of treatment. This involves screening embryos for genetic abnormalities before transferring to the uterus. Patients may opt for genetic testing in order to screen for aneuploidy (PGT-A), monogenic gene defects (PGT-M), or structural rearrangements (PGT-SR).

The type of PGT, the number of embryos being tested, the number of genetic mutations being screened for, and the reason you’re pursuing it can all impact total costs. TFI has years of experience with PGT and will help you navigate these costs with knowledge and compassion.
